The Masaryk Institute and Archives of the Czech Academy of Sciences aims to bring Masaryk’s life and professional career closer to the general public in these thematic pages, through the interactive map ‘In the footsteps of Masaryk’. The map aims to capture how he was remembered posthumously, but also to point to the politically driven erasure of his activities and his legacy from the cultural memory of the regions and among their citizens. The project is the result of a direct collaboration with various local institutions and individuals.
The map focuses on the Czech Republic and Slovakia, and is also gradually being extended to capture Masaryk’s movements across the former Austro-Hungarian Monarchy (mainly Vienna and its environs), as well as in other European locations and in Russia.
Everyone is welcome to alert us to new information on locations and to the necessary accompanying data (photos, GPS coordinates, information on the history of these sites). The subsequent processing and the publication of the record will take place in the Masaryk Institute and Archives and will follow the typical structure of the previously published material. We also welcome information on news and events, such as exhibitions, lectures, publications, and so on related to the personality of T.G. Masaryk.
